About our cause
THE FAMILY INFORMATION GROUP (FIG) is a registered charity that has been supporting disabled children and their families in Havering since 1981. It is managed by a committee and many committee members are the parents of children who have used our services in the past.
We currently provide two main services from our premises in Harold Hill; a pre-school for children aged two to four years old, including children with additional needs and disabilities mainly living near to our premises, and playschemes in school holidays for children with disabilities aged five to eighteen years old, living across Havering.
Our pre-school provides early years education, and our staff are experienced in caring for children with a wide range of disabilities and additional needs including medical, physical and learning. Children with additional needs can socialise, play and learn alongside their local peers in an inclusive environment helping them to achieve their potential and learn vital social skills before moving on to school.
Our playschemes provide opportunities for disabled children to take part in exciting opportunities either at our premises or on day trips. Activities on site include music therapy, arts and crafts, sensory cooking sessions, visits from wild animal shows, magicians, entertainers, bouncy castles and outdoor play. Day trips include visits to zoos, farms, alternative gym and games sessions, seaside, swimming and sensory rooms and gardens. All of the children have a one to one carer and some have two staff to enable them to take part. The majority of our staff work in local schools and many know the children from their schools. All of the activities we provide help children to build social skills and confidence which helps them when they return to school. The playscheme also provides a break for the parents of disabled children who are able to spend time with other children or have some much-needed time to themselves.
As well as our main services we also offer additional activities from time to time such as speech support for our pre-schoolers and parent social events or training, when funding is available.
We lease our building from the local authority, and it is fully accessible for the disabled. We are responsible for all our utilities, maintenance and repair costs as well as the rent. As I’m sure you can imagine the costs of all of these have increased greatly in recent years while demand for our services has also increased. Unfortunately, the available funding has not matched the increased costs we are seeing and we therefore need to raise funding to help with these ongoing essential expenses.
We need your help so we can continue to provide our services and expand them where we can!
Thank you for your support and good luck!
